This post begins our Career Changers’ series.
If you are looking for something new, or you are just starting your career journey, I hope it inspires you!
Liam is 22 and has been working in a fast food restaurant since he left school at 18. What started as a stopgap job turned into four years of routine shifts. Now, with more responsibilities and a desire for better pay and future prospects, Liam is ready for a change.
He is passionate about gaming and content creation, and he shares gameplay videos on his small YouTube channel. He also attends gaming meet-ups and follows gaming influencers online. His parents think he is wasting time and have suggested learning a trade — but Liam feels like something in tech might suit him better.
Using the Skills Mapping Tool in How to Get Into Tech, Liam explored what he already has to offer.
From his job, he listed these skills:
- Customer service and communication
- Teamwork and time management
- Adaptability and problem-solving
From his hobbies, he uncovered:
- Video editing and basic design
- Social media and content creation
- Strategy and attention to detail from gaming
These skills match real needs in tech, such as:
- Communication and digital teamwork
- Media creation and user engagement
- Problem-solving with digital tools
Liam searched jobs online and met up with a career’s advisor.
Together, they mapped Liam’s skills and experience to the following tech roles:
- Video editor or content creator
- Community manager for a gaming company
- Junior digital marketing assistant
- QA tester for games
- IT support or helpdesk assistant
By linking what he already knows to real tech needs, Liam now feels hopeful about a career he could enjoy — with better prospects and purpose. He has decided to get some work experience in digital marketing and content creation and take things from there.
