Then, return here for Zinnia’s story!
At 58, Zinnia had spent over a decade helping people access information as a librarian. Known for her calm, supportive nature and strong organisational skills, she loved her role. But after a motor accident affected her mobility, the daily commute became too much.
Zinnia began exploring remote jobs that would allow her to continue working — from home. She wanted a role where she could stay mentally active, use her skills, and still make a meaningful contribution.
Using the How to Get Into Tech guide, she took stock of everything she had to offer.
Skills from 12 years in the library:
- Research and organising information
- Digital systems and library databases
- Customer service and support
- Clear communication (written and verbal)
- Strong attention to detail
Other strengths:
- Fluent in French
- Event coordination at church
- Previous experience as a travel agent (customer service, admin, planning)
These skills match tech-related needs like:
- Managing and organising digital content
- Remote communication and support
- Online research
- Helping users with digital tools or services
Zinnia could now explore roles such as:
- Remote content or data management
- Online research assistant
- Customer service agent (bilingual English/French)
- Virtual event or project assistant
- Digital archive or knowledge base support
Freelance or part-time options are also possible, allowing her flexibility while staying active and engaged.
Are you thinking about a change too?
Like Zinnia, you may already have skills that translate well into tech or remote roles. You do not have to start over — just start where you are.
It’s never too late to try something new. Whether you’re 28 or 58, your skills are still valuable. The tech world has space for your experience, your story — and your next step.

Wow, Zinnia’s story is so inspiring! It’s amazing how her library experience and other strengths can translate so well into tech roles. This just proves that it’s never too late to pivot and explore new opportunities — and that transferable skills are everywhere! Thanks for sharing such a practical, uplifting example. I’m excited to see how many others will be encouraged to take that first step!
Yes, Emamode, it’s never too late. We must always count ourselves in, not out!
